Project Description
This Vancouver homeowner needed more than a cosmetic exterior update. Several areas around the property showed significant age and deterioration, particularly the older wood siding, trim, structural details, and masonry elements. The project called for targeted restoration and replacement work that would address compromised materials while giving the affected areas a cleaner, more durable finish.

The Challenge
The existing exterior presented a combination of aging materials and localized damage that required more than simply recoating the surfaces.
- Deteriorated Wood Siding – Sections of the existing horizontal wood siding showed considerable wear, splitting, and deterioration, making replacement a more practical solution than attempting to preserve compromised boards.
- Damaged Corner and Trim Details – Wood surrounding corners, openings, and other transitions had deteriorated in several locations, requiring careful attention to prevent weak areas from carrying into the finished work.
- Exposed Exterior Components – Downspouts, electrical connections, windows, and other fixtures were integrated into the affected areas, adding complexity to the removal and rebuilding process.
- Weathered Masonry Features – A stone column cap had visibly deteriorated, with cracking and worn material compromising both its appearance and its ability to properly finish the masonry below.
- Multiple Existing Materials – Wood, masonry, stucco, metal, and concrete met throughout the work areas, requiring the restoration to transition cleanly between different surfaces without disrupting surrounding elements.
Our Solution
Rather than covering over the visible problems, the project focused on replacing deteriorated materials and rebuilding key exterior details where they were needed most.
✔ Removal of Compromised Wood – Deteriorated siding and damaged wood components were removed from the affected sections so the new work could begin from a more reliable base.
✔ New Vertical Wood Cladding – The older horizontal siding was replaced with fresh vertical wood boards, creating a cleaner exterior surface while giving the renovated areas a noticeably updated appearance.
✔ Rebuilt Trim and Openings – New wood detailing was installed around windows, corners, and transitions to create defined edges and properly integrate the replacement cladding with the existing structure.
✔ Masonry Cap Restoration – The deteriorated top of the stone column was rebuilt with a new concrete cap, providing a solid, properly formed finish above the existing masonry.
✔ Careful Integration of Exterior Fixtures – Existing drainage, electrical, window, and adjacent building components were worked around carefully so the restored areas remained functional and visually organized.
The Results
The completed work addressed the underlying deterioration while giving the repaired sections a substantially cleaner and more intentional appearance.
- Renewed Exterior Woodwork – The damaged and heavily weathered siding was replaced with fresh wood, eliminating some of the most visibly deteriorated areas of the exterior.
- Stronger Architectural Details – Rebuilt corners, window surrounds, and trim provide cleaner transitions and a more finished appearance throughout the restored sections.
- A Noticeable Material Upgrade – The shift from aging horizontal boards to vertical wood cladding gives the renovated areas a fresh identity while retaining the natural character of wood.
- Restored Masonry Finish – The newly formed concrete cap provides a clean, solid top to the existing stone column and resolves the visibly deteriorated condition seen before the work.
- A Better Foundation for the Years Ahead – By addressing compromised materials instead of relying on surface level improvements alone, the project leaves these areas of the home in a more sound and maintainable condition.
Protect What Makes Your Home Last
Exterior deterioration does not always call for another coat of paint. When aging wood, trim, or architectural details need more substantial attention, Even Better Painting can help identify the right approach and restore the affected areas with care.
